Δύο άνθρωποι tragically lost their lives in New Jersey due to devastating floods caused by torrential rain that hit the state and the neighboring New York metropolitan area over the past 24 hours.

The heavy downpours led to significant disruptions at airports, highways, and the railway system.

In response to the severe conditions, Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency, confirming that two individuals were found deceased in their vehicle, swept away by a raging torrent in Plainfield. Murphy reported that certain areas experienced over 150 millimeters of rainfall in just two and a half hours. He attributed the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events to climate change, stating, “This is the new reality.”

Areas such as New Providence, Plainfield, and Scotch Plains faced severe challenges, with roads and homes submerged, while more than 50 millimeters of rain was recorded in just one hour at Central Park in Manhattan, marking the second-highest amount ever recorded in New York City, according to Mayor Eric Adams.

Footage showed several subway stations inundated during the storm on Monday night. Rohit Aggarwala, head of New York’s Environmental Protection Agency, explained that the city’s aging sewer system can handle only about 44 millimeters of rainfall per hour, while nearly triple that amount fell at the peak of the storm.

“I don’t remember seeing such a quantity of rain before,” remarked the New York City mayor.

In Westchester County, rescue teams worked diligently to free individuals trapped in their vehicles on flooded roads.
