Ένας ομογενής σέρφερ tragically lost his life today after suffering an attack from a large shark in the waters off Sydney. According to Néo Kosmo, the 57-year-old Mercury Psilakis leaves behind his wife and a young daughter.
The experienced surfer sustained critical injuries from the assault that occurred at Dee Why Beach shortly after 10 a.m. local time, while he was approximately 100 meters from the shore, enjoying a surf session with friends.
He was pulled from the water by fellow surfers, but had already lost a significant amount of blood and succumbed immediately, reported Police Inspector Stuart Thompson. Inspector John Duncan described the incident as a profound tragedy. “It’s something horrible, horrible. It’s one of those terrible events that happens very rarely… With tomorrow being Father’s Day, the tragedy is even more painful,” he emphasized.
Inspector Duncan noted that the victim “lost several body parts.” Two sections of his surfboard were recovered and are currently undergoing examination, the police confirmed.
As of now, authorities have not clarified the species of shark responsible for the attack, which has led to the closure of several beaches for public safety.
This fatality marks the first shark attack death in Australia’s most populous city since a British diving instructor lost his life in February 2022 at Little Bay, which is located further south. The last deadly shark incident recorded in Sydney was in 1963.
